A Codec is a device or program that compresses data to enable faster transmission and decompresses received data.

Codecs are compression technologies and have two components, an encoder to compress the files, and a decoder to decompress. There are codecs for data (PKZIP), still images (JPEG, GIF, PNG), audio (MP3, AAC) and video (Cinepak, MPEG-2, H.264, VP8).

PLEASE CONTINUE THIS TOPIC BY HIGHLIGHTING THE DIFFERENT CODECS USED AND HOW THEY MIGHT BE BETTER THAN OTHERS.

I think the internet is familiar enough with GIFs by now but in case you didn't know, a GIF is a Graphics Interchange Format that allows several images to be placed on a bitmap to form an animation.
