Encoding is the process of converting data into a format required for a number of information processing needs, including:
-Program compiling and execution
-Data transmission, storage and compression/decompression
-Application data processing, such as file conversion.

Transcoding is the process of converting a file from one encoding format to another. This allows the conversion of incompatible data to a better-supported, more modern form of data. Transcoding is often performed if the target device does not support the format or has only limited storage capability.

Is there an abbreviation for encoding and transcoding or are the full names always used?

I have been reading up on some of these terms and it is funny because I know what the process is for a lot of them, I just never knew the actual title of said process. Pretty cool to be learning it!
