Do CDNs use more servers?

It seems like dedicated servers around the world seem to help sites function the best. I would imagine this means that CDNs have to use more servers (smaller ones) to keep connection flowing closer and faster vs using one big one that is far away and has to file bandwidth according to distance from said server. Do they use more servers or am I misunderstanding this?

You have understood perfectly. The "smaller" serves placed closer to the end-viewer, is referred to as an edge-server or PoP (Point of Presence). Traditionally the more PoPs a CDN has, the greater the reach and stability of the stream are because the content is coming from the nearest PoP to the end-viewer.

Ah okay so it kind of works the same for gaming if I am thinking of the same thing. It is amazing to think of what the future will be when we are able to have more servers that run at better speeds and handle more traffic loads.
