Well they can make sure all their networks are functioning at the best levels they can for a start. This will often prevent issues with freezing, buffering, and dodgy quality of the the video. Also being able to adjust said networks when scales are higher in demand. Say for hosting a live sporting event where a lot of viewers will pile in to see it.

More technically, there's a lot of industry efforts directed towards improving streaming compression formats (codecs). There's increasingly more discussion around HEVC or H.265 the new video streaming codec which drastically improves delivery efficiency.

More recently there's also been greater recognition of the SRT Alliance (https://www.srtalliance.org/) (Secure Reliable Transport) whose aim is to congregate all of the industries' best to discuss and adopt improvements on Quality of Experience among other things.

Wow they are really stepping up there game these days. I am glad to see some improvements being done because this always felt like a dodgy area when it came to streaming. In the future, streaming may be as instantaneous as a click with no buffering.
